What is Moxibustion?
Moxa is a dried herb, usually mugwart, which is used in Chinese Medicine for its warming and strengthening properties. Moxibustion involves burning the dried herb moxa to release it’s healing properties and stimulating acupuncture points. Like Tui Na, moxibustion has been used in China for thousands of years and dates back long before acupuncture. Moxibustion, has also evolved in other Asian medical systems including; Japan, Korea, Tibet, and Vietnam.
Moxa can be applied either directly to the skin, or indirectly using a pre-rolled stick (especially useful when working with channels) or placed on an acupuncture needle. When applied directly to acupuncture points, it is usually fashioned into a cone shape and depending on the condition being treated, may be placed on a slice of ginger, garlic or mound of salt.
Sally sometimes uses Moxa as part of either an acupuncture or tui na treatment.
