Exercise for Fertility: How to Move with Your Menstrual Cycle (A TCM Guide)
Discover how to exercise for fertility by aligning movement with your menstrual cycle. A Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) guide to Yin, Yang, and the four phases of your cycle. When you’re trying to conceive, exercise can feel confusing. Should you push yourself harder to get fit, or slow down to conserve energy? From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. The type of exercise that best supports fertility depends on:
- Where you are in your menstrual cycle
- How you feel physically and emotionally
- Your current fitness level
- Any underlying health conditions
TCM views the menstrual cycle as a rhythmic flow between Yin and Yang, Qi and Blood. Each phase has unique energetic needs, and aligning your movement with these rhythms can:
- Support fertility naturally
- Improve blood flow
- Reduce stress
- Balance energy levels
When you’re trying to conceive (TTC), exercise should feel supportive, not draining. Gentle, nourishing movement is far more beneficial than high-intensity workouts that deplete your reserves.
Exercise for Fertility: Moving with Your Menstrual Cycle
Below is a TCM-inspired guide to exercising throughout the four phases of your menstrual cycle. Note: Days are approximate – every cycle is unique.
Phase 1 – Menstrual (Day 1-5 approx.)
Passive Yin phase. Qi and Blood are moving downward and outward. Your body is releasing menstrual blood and needs to rest and rebuild. Best exercise for fertility during your period:
- Gentle walking (especially in nature)
- Restorative or yin yoga
- Tai chi
- Soft stretching
Avoid during this phase:
- Intense cardio or endurance training
- Heavy lifting or HIIT
- Anything that leaves you depleted
Phase 2 – Follicular (Day 6-13 approx.)
Yin-building phase. Yin and Blood are replenishing; follicles are developing. Energy begins to rise – this is a good time to add uplifting, moderate exercise. Best exercise during the follicular phase:
- Brisk walking
- Swimming
- Flow yoga or Pilates
- Light cycling
Focus on building energy, not burning it out.
Phase 3 – Ovulation (Day 14 approx.)
Transition from Yin to Yang. Yin is at its maximum and transforms into Yang. Qi and Blood circulation is vital to support the egg’s release. Best exercise around ovulation for fertility:
- Moderate cardio (running, cycling)
- Light-to-moderate strength training
- Dancing
- Dynamic yoga
Exercise should feel invigorating, not exhausting. The goal is circulation, not depletion.
Phase 4 – Luteal (Day 15-28 approx.)
Yang phase. The body is warming and nurturing, preparing for possible implantation. Exercise should support warmth and stability without overheating. Best exercise during the luteal phase:
- Gentle to moderate walking
- Grounding yoga
- Low-impact aerobics
- Swimming
Key tip: Choose steady, supportive movement. The aim is to sustain energy, not push harder.
