The Emotional Landscape of Trying to Conceive: A 5 Element Perspective

Trying to conceive can stir up some of the deepest emotions we ever experience. As a fertility acupuncturist and herbalist grounded in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I see every day how mentally exhausting the journey to pregnancy can be.  It touches the mind, the spirit, the identity, and the heart.

TCM has always acknowledged what modern science is only just beginning to validate: that emotional wellbeing directly influences hormonal balance, reproductive function, and overall health. In TCM, emotions are intimately connected with the Five Elements—Fire, Wood, Earth, Water, and Metal. When one of these elements is out of balance, we feel it emotionally and physically.

Here’s a breakdown of each of these elements, and how they turn up in your fertility journey, and why acknowledging these emotions is such an important part of treatment and healing.

Fire Element: Sadness, Guilt & Heart Qi

Fire governs the Heart—the centre of joy, connection, and emotional ease. When Heart Qi is disrupted, sadness and guilt often rise to the surface.

You may feel this when:

  • Your period arrives, delivering yet another reminder that you’re not pregnant.
  • You start questioning whether pregnancy will ever happen for you.
  • You feel guilty toward your partner or sad for your family, believing (wrongly) that you’re somehow “failing.”
  • You’re anxious about medical interventions or test results.

When Fire is imbalanced, you may notice:

  • Difficulty connecting with your partner.
  • Loss of intimacy.
  • Trouble sleeping and settling your thoughts at night.

Supporting Heart Qi helps bring back emotional warmth, connection, and calm.

Wood Element: Anger, Frustration & Stagnant Liver Qi

Wood is the energy of growth, movement, and direction—qualities we desperately need when trying to conceive. But when Liver Qi becomes stuck, frustration builds.

You might feel:

  • Angry that everyone around you seems to fall pregnant effortlessly.
  • Trapped on a distressing cycle of hope, effort, disappointment, repeat.
  • Heightened emotional sensitivity from medications or treatment plans.

Physically, Liver Qi stagnation can show up as:

  • Painful or difficult periods.
  • Cycles that feel irregular or unpredictable.
  • A sense that your body is “stuck.”

When Wood is flowing, it provides passion, creativity, and the dynamic energy needed for new life.

Earth Element: Overthinking, Obsession & Depleted Spleen Qi

Earth is about nourishment, stability, and groundedness. But during TTC, many people slide into Earth imbalance—not eating properly, resting, or digesting properly, but thinking constantly.

Signs of Earth imbalance include:

  • Constantly comparing yourself with others on Instagram, Google, or fertility forums.
  • Feeling you must do everything perfectly—diet, supplements, tracking, timing.
  • A sense that you’re endlessly busy, yet not truly caring for yourself.
  • Overthinking as a coping mechanism for uncertainty.

When Spleen Qi is depleted:

  • Digestion suffers.
  • Energy drops.
  • The body struggles to feel safe, nourished, and receptive—key foundations for conception.

Rebalancing Earth helps bring back comfort, trust, and true self-care.

Water Element: Fear, Uncertainty & Weakened Kidney Qi

Water represents our deepest reserves – our willpower, vitality, and reproductive essence. When Kidney Qi is weakened, fear tends to dominate.

This might sound like:

  • “What if I don’t have enough eggs?”
  • “What if I’m too old?”
  • “What if this never happens for us?”
  • “We’re running out of time.”

These fears can push the body into a constant fight-or-flight state, increasing cortisol levels. Over time, this may impact:

  • Thyroid function
  • Healthy follicle development
  • Progesterone production
  • LH surge
  • Prolactin levels

Supporting Kidney Qi nourishes the roots – your deep vitality, trust, and reproductive energy.

Metal Element: Grief, Loss & Depleted Lung Qi

Metal is associated with letting go, self-worth, and the ability to hope again after pain. TTC can place enormous weight on the Lung system.

Emotionally, this element may be affected by:

  • Grief from not becoming pregnant as expected.
  • Feeling “not good enough” to conceive or carry a pregnancy.
  • Protecting yourself from disappointment – not daring to hope.
  • The profound emotional aftermath of pregnancy loss.

When Lung Qi is depleted:

  • Processing grief becomes harder.
  • Self-worth feels fragile.
  • The ability to breathe deeply – physically and metaphorically – feels limited.

Metal healing helps soften grief and restore the capacity to trust in possibility again.

Honouring Your Emotions Is Fertility Medicine

Every emotion you experience during this journey is valid. None of them are signs of weakness or failure – they are messages from the body asking for support.  We use these feelings to plan our treatment for you.

In TCM-based fertility work, we don’t separate your hormones from your emotions, or your physical symptoms from your spirit. They are one system, always communicating, always influencing each other.

With acupuncture, herbal medicine, lifestyle guidance, and emotional support, we work to bring these Five Elements back into balance – helping your body feel safe, nourished, connected, and ready to welcome new life.

If you’re navigating the emotional landscape of trying to conceive, you don’t have to do it alone. I’m here to support your whole being – body, mind, and spirit – every step of the way.
